As part of this year’s Santa Cruz River Dragonfly Festival, we are pleased to host our fourth annual Bugs & Bites at the Playground. Join Sonoran Institute’s Santa Cruz River team and experts from the University of Arizona: Rocio Guzman, Meredith Willmott, and Solomon Hendrix, as they unveil the mesmerizing world of dragonflies and leaf hoppers and uncover the astounding adaptations that have allowed them to evolve and survive in the Sonoran Desert. Join us for a fun family-friendly evening while relaxing in a fun downtown Tucson venue!
Como parte del Festival de Libélulas del Río Santa Cruz de este año, nos complace presentar nuestra cuarta edición anual de Bichos y Bocadillos en el Playground Bar & Lounge. Acompaña al equipo del Río Santa Cruz del Sonoran Institute y a expertos de la Universidad de Arizona: Rocío Guzmán, Meredith Willmott y Solomon Hendrix, mientras revelan el fascinante mundo de las libélulas y las chicharritas donde exploran las increíbles adaptaciones que les han permitido evolucionar y sobrevivir en el Desierto Sonorense.

Rocío Guzman, University of Arizona, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, Escuela de Recursos Naturales y del Medio Ambiente
Rocio is an ecologist from Sonora, Mexico. She is currently a PhD student at the Aquatic Ecology Lab of the University of Arizona and is studying dragonflies and damselflies in urban areas of the Sonoran Desert.
Rocío es una ecóloga originaria de Sonora, México. Actualmente es estudiante de doctorado en el Laboratorio de Ecología Acuática de la Universidad de Arizona y está investigando libélulas y caballitos del diablo en zonas urbanas del Desierto Sonorense.
Solomon Hendrix, University of Arizona, Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Entomology and Insect Science, Programa Interdisciplinario de Posgrado en Entomología y Ciencia de los Insectos | Meredith Willmott, University of Arizona, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Departamento de Ecología y Biología Evolutiva
Meredith and Solomon are Ph.D students and artists. Together they work on true hoppers: their diversity within the Sonoran Desert, and their interactions with other organisms (primarily ants). This work ranges from microscopic dissection to fieldwork within Tucson and is communicated through multiple artistic avenues. Solomon is a macrophotographer and ecological musician, Meredith is a scientific illustrator/scientific knitter, and non-traditional science communicator. Together their work seeks to illuminate the beauty and diversity within hoppers, through whichever means necessary.
Meredith y Solomon son estudiantes de doctorado y artistas. Juntos investigan a las verdaderas chicharritas: su diversidad en el Desierto Sonorense y sus interacciones con otros organismos (principalmente hormigas). Su trabajo abarca desde disecciones microscópicas hasta trabajo de campo en Tucson y lo comparten a través de diversas expresiones artísticas. Solomon es un macrofotógrafo y músico ecológico; Meredith es ilustradora científica, tejedora científica y comunicadora de ciencia no tradicional. Juntos buscan resaltar la belleza y diversidad de los saltamontes, utilizando cualquier medio necesario.
