Growing Water Smart Webinar Series

April 26, 2018 - May 24, 2018

A growing population, deepening water scarcity and longer, more severe droughts present tough challenges for many communities. Adopting proven methods to better manage water resources will build resilience for your community’s future. Join us for the Growing Water Smart Webinar Series where we will present lessons learned from communities in the North American West.

“Where to Start? Five Approaches to Integrate Water and Land Use Planning,” April 26, 2018 (11AM – 12PM PT). Harold Thomas, Climate Resilience Program Manager with the Sonoran Institute will share tried and true planning mechanisms used by communities in the North American West to curb water use through land use planning.

Followed by “How Water Smart Are We? Conducting a Self-Assessment,” May 17, 2018 (11AM – 12PM PT). Land use planning and water resource management are highly connected, yet often developed separately. By linking these two fields, a community can achieve significant gains in managing water demand. The Sonoran Institute has developed a Self-Assessment Tool to help local government and water providers get started. Harold Thomas, with the Sonoran Institute, will provide an overview of the tool and share examples of it in use.

Bringing in the summer with, “How to Talk about Climate Change and Resilience to Build Community Support (Yes! It is possible!),” May 24, 2018 (11AM – 12PM PT). Land use planning and water resource management are the foundation to resilient communities, but the topics can be complex and technical. How do you talk about the issues in your community in a way that both educates as well as excites? Join Marjo Curgus, Principal of Del Corazon Consulting, to build your communication and outreach skills to resonate with what really matters to your community. The webinar will provide an overview of the role of communication in designing a public involvement strategy, values-based messaging, and a framework to help you craft successful messages.

Each webinar is an hour-long—(1) APA CM available per event.
