ART INSTALLATION
As part of this year’s Santa Cruz River Dragonfly Festival, Sonoran Institute is pleased to partner with Maxie Adler and Kimi Eisele to bring back their art installation that made its debut along the Heritage Reach of the Santa Cruz River in May of 2025.
Landing Place uses handmade windsocks to raise the visibility of plants and animals that have returned with the introduction of reclaimed water to the Heritage Reach through downtown Tucson in recent years. Each design magnifies details from the living landscape and highlights the Santa Cruz River as a “landing place,” a site of layered ecological and human history and the very reason Tucson exists.
The windsocks will be displayed in four locations between the Heritage Reach and the Marana reaches of the Santa Cruz River. Go to all four locations to see the whole collection!
Como parte del Festival de Libélulas del Río Santa Cruz de este año, el Sonoran Institute se complace en colaborar con Maxie Adler y Kimi Eisele para presentar nuevamente su instalación artística, la cual debutó en el tramo Heritage del Río Santa Cruz en mayo de 2025.
Landing Place utiliza birutas (llamadas tambien mangas de vientos) hechas a mano para dar visibilidad a las plantas y animales que han regresado con la introducción de agua reciclada en el tramo Heritage del río, a lo largo del centro de Tucson, en los últimos años. Cada diseño magnifica los detalles del paisaje vivo y resalta al Río Santa Cruz como un “lugar de llegada”: un sitio con una historia ecológica y humana entrelazada, y la razón misma por la que Tucson existe.
Las mangas de vientos estarán exhibidas en cuatro ubicaciones entre el tramo Heritage y el tramo Marana del Río Santa Cruz. ¡Visita las cuatro ubicaciones para ver la colección completa!

Artists/Artistas:
MAXIE ADLER is a Tucson-based textile-artist, muralist, and printmaker whose work seeks to archive the ephemeral—tracing the stories embedded in landscape, memory, and vanishing wild places. Through public installations and community engagement, she bridges environmental consciousness with collective strength and care.
KIMI EISELE, a writer, visual artist, choreographer, and folklorist, creates stories, images, gatherings, and performances to illuminate connections among humans, plants, non-human animals, and landscapes. She works for the Southwest Folklife Alliance, where she documents expressive culture and curates public programs honoring diverse cosmologies, occupations, and cultural practices.
MAXIE ADLER es una artista textil, muralista y grabadora con base en Tucson, cuyo trabajo busca archivar lo efímero rastreando las historias incrustadas en el paisaje, la memoria y los espacios naturales desaparecidos. A través de instalaciones públicas y el trabajo con la comunidad, Maxie une la conciencia ambiental con la fuerza y el cuidado colectivos.
KIMI EISELE es escritora, artista visual, coreógrafa y folclorista. Crea historias, imágenes, encuentros y presentaciones que iluminan las conexiones entre seres humanos, plantas, animales no humanos y paisajes. Trabaja en Southwest Folklife Alliance, donde documenta la cultura expresiva y organiza programas públicos que honran diversas cosmovisiones, ocupaciones y prácticas culturales.
